![]() ![]() It’s not exactly a Tinker on a body but there are still loads of great constructs to tutor up. Scrapyard RecombinerĪnother great recursion piece, Scrapyard Recombiner was the first new modular card since Fifth Dawn. Crucible of Worlds seems too obvious and I can’t see myself splashing green to Crop Rotation over and over either. There has to be a way to abuse the modular ability on a land. It’s a great color fixer in any artifact deck and I love its reliability as a sacrifice target.īut I don’t think its potential has been unlocked yet. Power Depot is the first noncreature card with modular. It grows every time any artifact enters the battlefield, including your opponents’! In an artifact-heavy meta, this card can potentially become a threat in as quickly as one turn. Arcbound Crusher’s real value lies in its triggered ability. Arcbound CrusherĪ resounding four mana for a 1/1 with trample feels like a rip-off, because it is. It can end games but needs the right setup to be perfectly executed. At six mana, it’s a little too expensive to be “great” and its ability shrinks your other creatures slowly. Arcbound FiendĪrcbound Fiend starts out as a 3/3 with some middle-of-the-road evasion and a built-in way to grow its +1/+1 counters. As a 1/1 for one mana that moves its counter to another artifact creature on death, it’s an appropriately priced common you’ll want four of in any modular-themed deck. ![]() Arcbound Worker is the simplest Arcbound creature on Mirrodin. Arcbound WorkerĪh, the classic worker peon. I love the interaction of riot and modular on the same creature and I hope to see more crossover between +1/+1 counter abilities in the future. It’s more fairly priced than many of the other modular creatures, entering the battlefield as either a 5/5 or a 4/4 with haste. Arcbound SlasherĪrcbound Slasher is a great common hailing from MH2. Best of all, it won’t die if you remove all of its counters for its ability, meaning you won’t lose out on any counters you could otherwise redistribute among your other artifact creatures. The Javelineer’s utility is useful in a Limited environment and can become an effective rattlesnake to shake at your enemies with the right set up. It enters the battlefield as a 1/2 that can remove +1/+1 counters to deal damage to attacking or blocking creatures. Arcbound JavelineerĪrcbound Javelineer is the only modular creature with a toughness score. The best modular cards help you enable that strategy. I like to think of modular decks as akin to aristocrats decks since both want to constantly sacrifice and resurrect creatures for advantage. ![]() The conglomeration of these ideas led to the modular mechanic as we know it today. ![]() He wanted to avoid making another cycle of chimeras and make use of the spikes’ +1/+1 counter synergies by moving counters onto other creatures. In modern parlance we’d probably see this represented as the ability counters from Ikoria.ĭuring the design for the Mirrodin block, Rosewater wanted to make use of +1/+1 counters in a similar way to the spikes while also making artifact creatures matter. They can sacrifice themselves to put a mythical +2/+2 counter on any other chimera creature and permanently give that creature their respective ability. The chimeras on the other hand are all 4-mana 2/2 artifact creatures with one of four evergreen abilities: first strike, trample, flying, and un-keyworded vigilance. Spike Weaver’s repeatable Fog effect and Spike Feeder’s mana-free lifegain ability are both useful tools in any counters-themed deck. Two of the most popular spikes still see some play in EDH decks to this day. The spikes were 0/0 creatures that entered the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters that they could remove to activate abilities. Mark Rosewater designed modular to be reminiscent of the spike creatures from Exodus and the chimeras of Visions. Reduce, reuse, recycle! The History of Modular in MTG They donate their power and parts to new creatures each time they die. This allows their parts to be easily exchanged with other artifact creatures. Most of the Arcbound creatures appear as constructs and golems bound together by energies flaring around their joints. They originally appeared only on colorless artifact creatures but have expanded into red and white with MH2. The first 12 modular cards were introduced in Darksteel and Fifth Dawn back in 2004, with another 10 to follow in Modern Horizons and Modern Horizons 2. When it dies you can place a number of +1/+1 counters on a target artifact creature equal to the number of +1/+1 counters on the dying modular creature. A permanent with modular N basically enters the battlefield with N +1/+1 counters on it. Modular appears on cards as “modular N,” where N is usually a number (but not always! See: Arcbound Wanderer). A notable one that springs to mind is that if you complete quests and take additional soldiers and forts as rewards, those rewards go away if you turn off the Dry Storage or Encampment. (Though it's interesting from a mechanical standpoint, I still find it strange that upon ascending you are rewarded with the rarer black tokens for killing more people in your civilzation and not less.)īug-wise, the game is in good shape, but there are a few here and there. I'm sure there will be more interesting things in the final version, but increases on clicking power and (very small for the cost) increases in starting gold do not excite. The ascendance rewards feel very generic now compared to the last revision. ![]() Every other quest generally has something that is good for you as an outcome vagrants are not good for you. Missionary quests have a risk of war while they're going on and they force you to take large amounts of vagrants afterwards, which is a double whammy on risk. Quests that reward food boosts make it difficult to manage the population of the city because the game doesn't let you stop food from increasing the population. We now have ways to merge or sell every kind of hero, which is good, but we still need a way to refuse rewards. (Moses was in the game previously, but he is a multidenominational figure in Abrahamic religions.) I'm not offended by this myself, just wanted to make you aware. The Tower of Babel as depicted here is distinctly biblical in nature there are variants on the myth of Babel which span across various religions, but this one veers toward the Christian bible. The inclusion of the Babel Tower, as well as some of text, like "You are not in Gods' favor" during the storm effect, may offend some. Maybe there should be a hard limit to the floors.) That said, if you have an achievement like Stairway to Heaven or somerhing for getting x number of floors in the Tower, I could see some use - but against most people will only pursue it one time for that achievement. (Side note: the graphics for the Tower stop evolving somewhere around level 15-17 if I recall correctly, and it's a little weird to keep building it with no visual change. (I've only been able to build up to level 37.) Getting the Tower to level 15 gives you Bruegel, but his only purpose is in getting the Tower higher, which again does nothing for you. It's nice for a challenge mode or bragging rights, I suppose. Each floor you build just makes the game harder with no benefit. Apart from the ability to ascend from falling, which you get at level 1, the Tower doesn't give you anything but trouble. Speaking of the Babel Tower, I love this idea thematically and the graphics (taken from Bruegel's masterpiece) are great but the execution is just flat. Even though the Tower appears to max out at 120% risk in all categories, Bruegel still can't hope to keep up. Bruegel is mostly useless even for building the Tower since his 1% reduction per Tower level does not come close to keeping up with the Tower's risk increases. I use him the entire game but to be honest, most non-unique square heroes don't bring a lot to the table. Let him stun disasters with Dogmatism or something at least. Nationalism is one of the worst philosophy bonuses. The base damage he adds is nothing spectacular compared to rare heroes, and he lacks any unique ability. The unique heroes have been toned down a little (Moses is still extremely useful for 90% of the game) which is probably for the best, but in so doing, Ozymandias has basically become useless. ![]() (As of right now, I think I've gotten all I can get out of this version.) Gumby's legs and feet were made wide to pragmatically ensure that the figure would stand up during stop motion filming. Clokey saw the color green as both racially neutral and a symbol of life. ![]() Gumby's appearance was inspired by a suggestion from his wife, Ruth (née Parkander), that Gumby be based on the Gingerbread Man. The name "Gumby" came from the muddy clay found at Clokey's grandparents' farm that his family called "gumbo". On January 29, 1955, Clokey produced and filmed the first pilot episode starring Gumby, titled Adventures of Gumby: A Sample, but never aired. In 1955, Clokey showed Gumbasia to film producer Sam Engel, who encouraged him to develop his technique by animating figures into children's stories. Much of Gumby's look and feel was inspired by this technique of camera movements and editing. Gumbasia was created in the "kinesthetic" style taught by Clokey's USC professor Slavko Vorkapić, described as "massaging of the eye cells". Ĭlokey's first animated film was a 1953 three-minute student film called Gumbasia, a surreal montage of moving and expanding lumps of clay set to music in a parody of Disney's Fantasia. Gumby was created by Art Clokey in the early 1950s after he finished film school at the University of Southern California (USC). The 1988 syndicated series added Gumby's sister Minga, mastodon friend Denali, and chicken friend Tilly. Other characters include Prickle, a yellow fire-breathing dinosaur who sometimes styles himself as a detective with pipe and deerstalker hat like Sherlock Holmes Goo, a flying blue shapeshifting mermaid who spits blue goo balls Gumbo and Gumba, Gumby's parents and Nopey, Gumby's dog whose entire vocabulary is the word "nope". Their creation was inspired by the trouble-making Katzenjammer Kids. His arch-nemeses are the G and J Blockheads, a pair of silent antagonistic red humanoid figures with cube-shaped heads, one with the letter G on the block, the other with the letter J. His primary sidekick is Pokey, an anthropomorphic orange pony. The Gumby franchise follows Gumby's adventures through different environments and historical eras. On its second album this year (yet another is due in March) this rinky-dink version of Add N to (X) throws together wheezing analog-synth lines, stale breakbeats, workmanlike live drumming, and often cheesy, sometimes glaringly obvious samples (a flute lick from Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch, a vibe riff from Pet Sounds) with the finesse of an orangutan using a paint-by-numbers kit. His inevitable euphoric crescendos are hard to resist on this import-only compilation of recent singles–particularly on “House Inferno,” a clever appropriation of the roiling bass line from the Trammps classic “Disco Inferno.” This stuff is all geared to the dance floor, but it works just as well for boogying around the living room.ĮMPEROR PENGUIN Extreme Gaming (My Pal God) If there’s anything worse than a guitar-rock band that’s run out of ideas, it’s an electronic rock band that’s run out of ideas. JEREMY BOYLE Songs From the Guitar Solos (Southern) On his solo debut, Joan of Arc keyboardist Boyle manipulates hard-rock guitar wanking by Kiss, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix–a great idea, but the resulting ambient soundscapes are so amorphous the source material might as easily have been chirping crickets or humming refrigerators. The singer’s adenoidal quaver puts a glam edge on “Microstars Save the Day,” and the twin guitars that chug throughout most of the rest of the record strategically punctuate the more salacious details of a cover of Prince’s “Darling Nikki.” The album, recorded by Dave Trumfio, concludes with “Take Your Bow,” a surprisingly poignant farewell to the band’s longtime producer, Phil Bonnet, who died in February.
